Soda water, with its refreshing taste, weakly alkaline properties, and metabolism-friendly nature, has rapidly emerged as a leading health drink. The market scale continues to expand, presenting vast opportunities for development.

A complete soda water production line must sequentially complete key stages, including raw water treatment, carbonation, flavoring, filling, and packaging. Each stage adheres to stringent technical standards and requires professional equipment and technical expertise. At three critical nodes—raw water treatment, sterile filtration (shelf-life preservation), and gas/air purification—filtration technology plays an irreplaceable role.

FLOWCHART OF THE PRODUCTION PROCESS OF SODA WATER

SODA WATER PRODUCTION PROCESS

Reason for FailurePercentageProblem Description
Excessive Total Plate Count (TPC)65.80%The primary cause, reflecting lax hygiene control during production.
Excessive Bromate6%A byproduct of ozone disinfection, predominantly found in natural soda water.
Excessive Yeast6%Sub-standard disinfection of the processing environment or equipment.

According to random inspection data released in recent years by regulatory authorities at both the national and provincial/municipal levels in China, the primary causes of non-compliance in soda water products are mainly concentrated in the following areas:

In response to the quality challenges identified in soda water production for Excessive Total Plate Count (TPC), Bromate and Yeast, Darlly Filtration provides advanced filtration solutions designed to effectively control microbial contamination and impurity residues at every stage—from the source water to the finished product. We empower enterprises to mitigate the risks of non-compliance and significantly enhance the stability of their product quality.

Raw Water Filtration

HF Series High Flow Pleated Filter Cartridges

The deep membrane structure of the HF High-Flow Pleated Filter Cartridge is composed of multi-layered, ultrafine PP (Polypropylene) fiber membranes in a gradient-density configuration. This allows the layers with larger pore sizes to function as a pre-filter, while the layers with smaller pore sizes intercept fine contaminants. Consequently, this design combines the dual advantages of traditional depth filtration and surface interception.

Carbonation

Sterile Filtration for Quality Preservation: Precision Filtration to Extend Shelf Life and Safeguard Drinking Safety

One of the core characteristics of soda water is its weak alkalinity. Its primary ingredient contains sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), a component prone to bacterial growth at ambient temperatures. Bacteria proliferate rapidly in micro-alkaline environments, which not only compromises the taste and produces off-odors but also leads to product spoilage and potential safety hazards for consumers.

Traditional methods used in beverage plants, such as Pasteurization or Ozone sterilization, inevitably leave behind traces of microbial residue. Furthermore, if the hygiene of the production line is compromised, bacteria introduced into the system—though their growth may be slowed—can still survive and persist within the final product.

Sterile cold filling processes utilizing membrane filtration have become the preferred choice for soda water manufacturers. This method not only removes trace insoluble impurities introduced by solid raw materials but also sterilizes the liquid to reduce the initial Total Plate Count (TPC). This prevents contamination during production, ensures consistent product quality, and extends shelf life.

Available options include Darlly Polyethersulfone (PES) or Nylon sterilizing-grade membrane filter cartridges. The 0.45μm cartridges are primarily used to remove microorganisms such as bacteria and yeast, along with fine impurities, thereby reducing the microbial load of the soda water. The 0.22μm cartridges, fully validated through bacterial challenge testing, achieve "absolute sterilization" and represent the critical process for guaranteeing drinking safety. For optimal results, it is recommended that manufacturers implement 0.22μm sterilizing-grade filter cartridges directly as a comprehensive solution.

Sterile Filtration

  • BDP Series Hydrophilic PTFE Pleated Filter Cartridges

During the carbonation process of soda water, if a pressurized direct-injection CO₂ technique is employed, the purity of the gas must be closely monitored. As gas flows through the piping system, it may come into contact with the external environment, potentially carrying particles or microbial contaminants that can adversely affect the final beverage.

To protect product quality, a Darlly hydrophobic PTFE 0.22 μm filter cartridge is recommended at the CO₂ inlet point. Its hydrophobic PTFE membrane is designed for gas filtration, effectively removing particles, bacteria, and other contaminants from the CO₂ stream before contact with the beverage. This helps maintain carbonation cleanliness, product consistency, and food safety standards.

Pre-filtration builds a strong first line of defense at the source, while sterilizing-grade cartridges safeguard the final standard of product safety.

From raw water purification to microbial control and shelf-life protection, Darlly Filtration plays a critical role in both stages. It is a core support in preserving the crisp taste, drinking safety, and product shelf life of sparkling water beverages.
